What to see and do on your trip to the Okavango Delta?
The Okavango Delta is the largest inland river delta in the world. In 2014 it was declared the thousandth UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique ecosystem covers an area of 15,000km2 of the wild land of Africa, where crystal clear waters seem to float over the desert. The Okavango Delta is the natural habitat of many animals, including the Lechwe antelope, which is only found in swampy areas; the water lizard, the osprey and the stork. Observing a myriad of waterfowl at dawn offers an extraordinary spectacle.
The Delta is fed by the Okavango River, which rises in the highlands of Angola, where the Benguela Plateau receives an annual rainfall of 2,000 mm. The water enters Botswana and heads southeast, flowing inland forming this paradise of swamps, reedbeds, streams, floodplains, islands and long stretches of crystal clear water. This huge floodplain contains 95% of Botswana’s surface water.
You can’t miss a ride on mokoro (traditional canoe). The mokoro was introduced to the Delta by the Bayei in the eighteenth century. These handmade canoes are perfect for navigating the calm waters of the Okavango. A poler sits at the back of the canoe, silently guiding it through the canals, while a maximum of two passengers travel comfortably seated in front, just inches from the water. Since the visitor goes unnoticed, a mokoro ride is a unique experience for animal watching.
What to see and do on your trip to Moremi National Park?
The Moremi Game Reserve, an authentic African wildlife paradise, covers a third of the Okavango. Moremi, located on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta, is considered one of the best animal reserves in Africa, with a diversity of habitats that combines acacia and mopan forests with floodplains and lagoons. In the 60s, the Tswana declared Moremi a nature reserve. Black and white rhinos have been successfully reintroduced into the park. There is an ongoing program to increase the numbers.
The best time to see the animals is from July to October, when wells are concentrated around the permanent water of the River Khwai, the Third Bridge and the Xakanaxa Lagoon. The land part constitutes only 30% of the reserve, the remaining area is part of the Okavango Delta.
There are many animals and it is common to see elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas, jackals and different types of antelopes, including red lechwe and sitatunga. In the reserve there are many types of accommodation and private camps.
All have water and showers. The Khwai River attracts large herds of elephants that come to bathe. The Xakanaxa lagoon is one of the most spectacular camping areas, with its forests and canals, where you can observe hippos grazing on the banks. Hyenas are often seen in the Third Bridge environment which is located on a small island that can only be accessed by wooden bridges. Animals often roam the area and crocodiles are often seen in the waters under the bridge. Be careful when swimming!
The nearest town is Maun, a resort town, which has the second busiest airport in South Africa. From here, light aircraft transport travelers to the various accommodations in the Delta. Maun has many restaurants and pubs, as well as craft shops.
What to see and do on your trip to Chobe National Park?
Chobe National Park is home to some of the largest concentrations of animals on the African continent, including what is believed to be the largest surviving population of elephants in Africa.
Chobe, with an area of 10,566 km2, is the second largest national park in Botswana. It is divided into three areas; Serondela, Savuti and Linyati. The Chobe River, Savuti and Linyati Marshes are perfect places for the classic African safari. During the safari, it is possible to see lions, antelopes and wildebeests, among many others. In the river, it is possible to see hippopotamus and huge crocodiles swimming next to the elephants. Boat trips are a pure safari adventure too!
In this area you can find 440 of the 500 species of birds that are known in Botswana, including the violet-breasted caracca, the national bird. All major species including giraffe, elephant, zebra, impala, tsessebe, ruano antelope, marta, ñu, kudu, buffalo, water cobo, eland antelope, lion, hyena, jackal and sometimes even Chita and African wild dog, inhabit the Savuti area. Savuti is known for its predators, especially populations of lions and spotted hyenas.
The dry winter months are magnificent to observe animals, as it is when large herds of elephants, buffaloes and zebras gather next to the river and gather together with giraffes and antelopes. It is a spectacular place for the sighting of water birds, such as pelicans.
Kasane, located in the northeastern corner of Botswana, is the gateway to Chobe National Park. This small town is the meeting point for four countries, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia.
It has an international airport and several luxury safari accommodations. Kasane is the starting point for exciting terrestrial and water safaris. Victoria Falls is only 70km away.
